One millenium ago, the territory on which Viareggio lies today, was covered by the sea and the hinterland was formed by big and vast
marshes. In about 1460 the inhabitants of Lucca, decided to reclaim the marshes around the coast,so that they conquered a secure landing place for both
the import and commerce.The 's symbol is the tower called “di Matilde” built by the Senate of Lucca in 1550.During the time, it was declared
a free port .Today in this town ,you can appreciate several villas, cafe', and bathing establishments,as symbol of Art Nouveau.
An enchanting imagine,is the Gran Cafe' Margherita,planned in 1928, with wonderful decorations executed,as in front of many villas, along
the promenade, by Galileo Chini.
